A
little bit about ourselves. The
club was formed in 1952 by the old scholars of Prince Henry's
Grammar School, Otley and thereafter the team was called Otliensians.
(Only old scholars were invited to join the team in the early
years). Initially friendly games were played on grass pitches
at the school on Farnley Lane, Otley. In later years the team
played on grass pitches on fields by the river in Otley Park.
When all-weather pitches became more popular we played for a
few seasons at Holt Park before moving to Ben Rhydding Astro
Turf about 12 years ago. The teams colours have always been
navy, royal blue and white although in the early years the shirts
were white, skirts navy and socks striped as they are now.
The Isle of Man Tour started in 1982 and was instigated by the
players from the Bedale Hockey Club. Whilst playing them one
Saturday they mentionedthey had toured the Isle of Man and what
a good time they had and it just stemmed from there. The first
tour was quite memorable in that the first night we hardly drank
anything, went to bed early, and complained about the noise
coming from the bar downstairs. Stating quite seriously that
we needed our sleep as we were playing hockey early next morning.
This frame of mind lasted until the next night when we really
got into the swing of things and realised that touring meant
drinking plenty, getting hardly any sleep and still playing
hockey early next morning.
We have close links with Old
Oltiensians Rugby Club based at Chaffers Field, Otley, who
we join for many social events. Otliensians hockey club has
two ladies teams, and although we play hockey competitively,
above all Otliensians is about having fun doing it, on and off
the pitch.
